Tart Grilled Cheese

Looking for a light and spur of the moment meal? In most kitchens, you can always find apples, bread, and cheese! Bread and cheese=normal…..apples and cheese= a lovely snack, but a sandwich with cheese and apples?? YES! An interesting combination this surely is…but the tartness of the apple and the subtle yet bold flavor of the cheese compliment each other.

Ingredients serves 1

1/2 Apple

Few slices of cheese

2 pieces of bread

Directions

Cut up your apple into small slices.  Granny Smith apples work best with this recipe because they are so flavorful.  Next, slice up the cheese.  I used white cheddar cheese because it is smooth and sharp.  When the apple and cheese are sliced, place them evenly between 2 slices of bread.

Place your sandwich in a skillet and cook on low heat. Use about 1 tablespoon of butter when cooking each side.  Make sure to cook on low heat to avoid burning.  Let cook for 1-2 minutes on each side.

Next time you are in a pickle of what to prepare, treat yourself to this unique and juicy sandwich!

About Humble Foodie

While we both love to eat well, life as AmeriCorps volunteers doesn’t afford us the budget to try every new restaurant and type of cuisine. With many post-graduate expenses and limited financial resources, what’s a foodie to do? The answer is here, at The Humble Foodie. Instead of spending our hard-earned cash paying other people to cook for us, we’re spending as frugally as possible making delicious meals at home.

Thanks for the idea! Did not think to add apple to my grilled cheese sandwiches. My apartment has a panini press so that’s what I used.
